Subject Matter Expert (SME)

A subject matter expert (SME) is a person with deep, authoritative knowledge of a specific topic, process, or domain whose expertise is drawn on to create accurate, credible learning content. In training projects, SMEs are the source of truth that instructional designers translate into effective learning. SMEs provide the technical accuracy, real-world examples, edge cases, and context that designers and authoring teams lack. The collaboration is a division of labour: the SME owns "what is correct and important", while the instructional designer owns "how to teach it effectively". Managing this relationship — extracting knowledge efficiently and respecting the SME's limited time — is a core project skill. In fast-moving fields, ongoing SME involvement also keeps content current as processes, regulations, or products change. Business impact: Effective SME collaboration ensures training is accurate and credible, preventing the costly errors and loss of trust that come from teaching outdated or incorrect information.
