Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT)
Virtual instructor-led training (VILT) is live, instructor-led teaching delivered remotely over a virtual classroom or video conferencing platform rather than in a physical room. It combines the real-time interaction of classroom training with the reach and cost savings of online delivery. In VILT, an instructor runs a scheduled session using tools such as screen sharing, breakout rooms, polls, whiteboards, and chat. Learners join from anywhere, and sessions are typically recorded for later review. When the virtual classroom is built into an LMS, attendance, recordings, and completion can be captured automatically against each learner. VILT became the default for distributed teams because it removes travel and venue costs while preserving the live elements — questions, discussion, and instructor adaptation — that make instructor-led training effective. Its main risks are learner fatigue and disengagement, which good session design (shorter blocks, frequent interaction) mitigates. Business impact: VILT lets organisations deliver consistent, interactive training to a global workforce at a fraction of classroom cost, while still tracking participation and outcomes when run inside an LMS.
