Open Badges

Open Badges are a verifiable, portable digital-credential standard (maintained by 1EdTech) used to recognise skills, achievements and milestones. Each badge is an image embedded with metadata describing who earned it, who issued it, the criteria met and supporting evidence — so it can be trusted and verified anywhere, not just inside the issuing platform. Learners can collect badges across different systems and display them on profiles, CVs or professional networks such as LinkedIn. In an LMS like Moodle, badges can be awarded automatically when learners complete activities, courses or competencies, or granted manually by a teacher. Used well, badges add motivation through visible recognition and create a granular, shareable record of learning that complements traditional certificates.
