cmi5 is a specification published by the Aviation Industry Computer-Based Training Committee (AICC) that acts as a “profile” on top of xAPI (Tin Can API). It solves the biggest limitation of raw xAPI: while xAPI is a powerful and flexible data standard, it provides no rules for how an LMS should launch content or what statements content must send. cmi5 fills that gap by defining mandatory launch parameters, required xAPI statements (launched, initialized, completed, passed, failed, terminated), and how the LMS should interpret them.
In practice, cmi5 gives organisations the best of both worlds: the consistent, predictable LMS integration behaviour of SCORM (course launches reliably, completion data always flows back correctly) combined with xAPI’s rich data model (detailed statements about learner activity, offline support, multi-device tracking). It is widely considered the future-forward replacement for SCORM, particularly for organisations building modern e-learning content for Moodle, TalentLMS, or custom LMS platforms.

cmi5 is increasingly supported by modern LMS platforms and authoring tools (Articulate Storyline 360, Adobe Captivate) and is the recommended standard for new e-learning development where rich analytics and interoperability are priorities.
