cmi5 is a modern eLearning specification that defines how content communicates with a learning management system, combining the rich data-tracking power of xAPI with the structured course-management rules that SCORM traditionally provided. Often described as bridging SCORM and xAPI, cmi5 lets an LMS launch content, pass standardised data such as completion and score, and capture detailed experience statements in a Learning Record Store — including for content delivered outside the browser or on mobile. It aims to be the successor to SCORM, giving organisations richer analytics while retaining the launch, sequencing and reporting structure that enterprise training requires.
