Competency-based training (CBT) is a learning approach in which training is designed and assessed against specific, predefined competencies — observable, measurable behaviours and skills required for a role. Rather than measuring time spent in training, competency-based programmes measure demonstrated mastery: a learner progresses only when they can prove they have achieved the defined competency standard.
It is widely used in healthcare, manufacturing, financial services, and aviation, where specific skills must be demonstrated before employees can perform critical tasks unsupervised. A surgeon must demonstrate specific procedural competencies. A pharmacist must pass dispensing competency assessments. A bank relationship manager must demonstrate product knowledge and compliance competencies before advising customers.
Key Features of Competency-Based Training
- Defined competency standards for each role or task
- Assessment-driven progression — learners advance by demonstrating competency, not by completing time
- Multiple assessment methods — written tests, practical observation, simulations, supervisor sign-off
- Individual pacing — some learners achieve competency faster; none progress without demonstrating it
- Clear audit trail — essential for regulated industries with compliance requirements
An LMS supporting competency-based training must track learner progress against individual competencies, not just course completion, and support multiple assessment types including practical observation checklists.
