Spaced Repetition

« Back to Glossary Index

Spaced repetition is a learning technique in which content is reviewed at increasing intervals over time — rather than in a single concentrated session — to move information from short-term to long-term memory. It is one of the most scientifically validated methods for improving knowledge retention, and it directly counters the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve.

How Spaced Repetition Works

When a learner first encounters a piece of information, they review it again after a short interval — perhaps one day. If they recall it correctly, the next review is scheduled further out — three days, then a week, then two weeks, then a month. If they struggle to recall it, the interval resets to shorter. This algorithm (the SM-2 algorithm, used in flashcard tools like Anki) ensures learners spend more practice time on concepts they’re weak on and less time on concepts they’ve already mastered.

Spaced Repetition in Corporate Training

  • Product knowledge: Sales teams review product features, pricing, and competitive differentiators in daily 5-minute flashcard sessions
  • Compliance refreshers: Key regulatory rules revisited at spaced intervals so they remain top-of-mind throughout the year — not just at annual recertification
  • Language and terminology: Technical vocabulary, industry acronyms, and customer-facing language reinforced through spaced practice
  • Post-training reinforcement: Key concepts from a training workshop revisited over 30/60/90 days to prevent the forgetting curve from erasing the investment

Spaced Repetition vs Traditional Revision

Traditional “cramming” — reviewing all material close to a test — produces short-term recall but poor long-term retention. Spaced repetition produces the opposite: slower initial acquisition but dramatically stronger long-term retention. For corporate training, where the goal is durable competence rather than a one-time test pass, spaced repetition is significantly more effective than any single training event.
