xAPI (Experience API), also known as Tin Can API, is a modern eLearning standard that tracks learning experiences far beyond what SCORM can capture. Instead of only tracking what happens inside an LMS, xAPI can record any learning activity — watching a video on YouTube, completing a job-shadowing task, practising a skill in a simulation, or reading an article.
How xAPI Works
xAPI uses simple statements in the format: “[Noun] [Verb] [Object]” — for example, “Rahul completed Sales Training Module 3” or “Priya scored 92% on Compliance Quiz.” These statements are sent to a Learning Record Store (LRS), which can be a standalone system or built into your LMS. Unlike SCORM, xAPI works without a constant internet connection and doesn’t require content to be hosted inside an LMS.
xAPI vs SCORM: Key Differences
- Scope: xAPI tracks learning anywhere; SCORM only tracks inside the LMS
- Data richness: xAPI captures nuanced interactions; SCORM captures pass/fail, score, time
- Offline support: xAPI works offline and syncs later; SCORM requires an active LMS connection
- Mobile: xAPI is mobile-native; SCORM has known issues on mobile browsers
- Adoption: SCORM is more universally supported today; xAPI adoption is growing steadily
Should You Use xAPI or SCORM?
For most corporate training programmes in India, SCORM 1.2 remains the practical standard — it works with every major LMS and every major authoring tool. xAPI is worth adopting if you need to track informal learning, mobile offline learning, simulations, or blended learning that happens outside the LMS. Many organisations run both standards simultaneously.
EdzLMS supports both SCORM and xAPI
Deliver, track, and enhance your eLearning content regardless of which standard it uses.
