Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for designing courses and content that are accessible and effective for the widest possible range of learners from the outset, rather than retrofitting accommodations later. It is built on three principles: provide multiple means of Engagement (the 'why' of learning), multiple means of Representation (the 'what', presenting information in varied formats), and multiple means of Action and Expression (the 'how', letting learners demonstrate knowledge in different ways). By offering flexible options — captions, transcripts, varied media and assessment choices — UDL benefits everyone, including learners with disabilities, and reduces barriers across the whole audience.
