Reskilling is the process of training employees to perform entirely different job functions — either because their current role is being eliminated or transformed by technology, or because the organisation needs capability in new areas. Unlike upskilling (which builds depth in existing skills), reskilling moves employees into new career directions and requires learning from a lower baseline.
Large-scale reskilling programmes are typically responses to automation, role redundancy, or strategic business pivots — a bank moving staff from branch operations to digital customer service, a manufacturing company training assembly workers for quality inspection roles, or an IT firm transitioning developers from legacy technologies to cloud platforms. McKinsey estimates that by 2030, over 375 million workers globally may need to reskill due to automation.
Effective Reskilling Requires
- A thorough skills gap analysis mapping current skills to target role requirements
- Role transition pathways that acknowledge transferable skills
- Structured learning paths with clear milestones and assessments
- Manager support and time protected for learning
- An LMS to track progress and certify readiness for the new role
