Personalised Learning

« Back to Glossary Index

Personalised learning is an instructional approach in which the learning experience is dynamically adapted to suit each individual — their existing knowledge level, learning pace, preferred formats, job role, and specific skill gaps. Rather than delivering the same course to everyone, personalised learning systems present different content paths, adjust difficulty based on performance, and recommend next steps based on individual data.

In corporate L&D, personalised learning is increasingly delivered through AI-driven LMS platforms and learning experience platforms (LXPs) that analyse learner behaviour and performance data to surface relevant content recommendations, skip over already-mastered material, and prioritise the areas where each learner needs the most development. This contrasts with the traditional “one-size-fits-all” course model that treats a new hire and a 10-year veteran identically.

Mechanisms for personalised learning

  • Adaptive assessments — questions that adjust difficulty based on prior answers
  • AI content recommendations — algorithm-driven suggestions based on role, behaviour, and gaps
  • Learning paths by role/level — pre-defined but role-specific sequences
  • Self-directed playlists — learners curate their own development journey
  • Pre-assessments — knowledge checks that skip mastered content and focus on gaps

Personalised learning improves completion rates, reduces time-to-competency, and increases learner satisfaction by making training feel relevant rather than generic.
