Learning Styles

Learning styles is the popular idea that individuals learn best when taught in their preferred mode — often labelled visual, auditory, reading/writing or kinaesthetic (the VARK model). While the notion is widely held, decades of research have found little evidence that matching instruction to a supposed style improves learning outcomes, making it a well-known myth in learning science. The useful takeaway is not to label learners, but to present material in multiple complementary formats — text, visuals, audio and hands-on practice — which benefits everyone. This aligns with principles like Universal Design for Learning and multimedia learning.
