SCORM vs xAPI

« Back to Glossary Index

SCORM vs xAPI is one of the most common technical decisions in corporate eLearning. Both are standards that govern how learning content communicates with an LMS — but they differ significantly in scope, capability, and how widely they are supported. Understanding the difference helps L&D teams choose the right standard for their content and infrastructure.

SCORM vs xAPI: Side-by-Side Comparison

  • Introduced: SCORM — 2001 (SCORM 1.2) / 2004 (SCORM 2004) | xAPI — 2013
  • Where it tracks: SCORM tracks only inside the LMS | xAPI tracks learning anywhere — apps, simulations, real-world activities
  • Data captured: SCORM captures completion, score, time spent | xAPI captures any learning statement (“Rahul completed X”, “Priya scored Y on Z”)
  • Offline support: SCORM requires a live LMS connection | xAPI works offline and syncs when reconnected
  • Mobile compatibility: SCORM has known issues on mobile browsers | xAPI is fully mobile-native
  • LMS support: SCORM is supported by virtually every LMS | xAPI support is growing but less universal
  • Learning Record Store: SCORM uses the LMS directly | xAPI requires an LRS (which may be built into the LMS)

Which Should You Use?

Use SCORM if your content is built in standard authoring tools (Articulate, Captivate, iSpring), your LMS supports it reliably, and your training stays within the LMS environment. SCORM 1.2 remains the safest, most compatible choice for 90% of corporate eLearning programmes today.

Use xAPI if you need to track learning outside the LMS (mobile offline, job-based tasks, simulations, third-party tools), want richer interaction data, or are building a modern learning ecosystem with multiple platforms feeding into a central data store. Many organisations adopt both — SCORM for existing content, xAPI for new AI-powered or mobile-first experiences.

EdzLMS supports both SCORM and xAPI

Deliver, track, and enhance your content regardless of standard — and layer AI on top automatically.
